SAUVIGNON BLANC

The Elgin Valley's Sauvignon Blancs have already achieved national and international acclaim. Shannon Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc expresses all the typical Elgin Sauvignon Blanc nuances. A dash of Semillon is added to round off the edges of the Sauvignon Blanc acidity and also provides a fuller mouth feel to the mid palette.

“After tasting close to 300, Sauvignon of the 2008 vintage, I am now in a position to honestly say that it has not been a fantastic year for Cape Sauvignon and makes listing and my life as a passionate sommelier very tough, as I much as I love Cape wines and try be a good ambassador, the stuff out there is pretty horrible..........only about 9 wines worth listing and 1 of them is.....................

But here comes another trick from Shannon Vineyards, in a vintage of intermittent rain, and rot, where dilution is the hallmark of 2008, Shannon vineyards have managed to retain the true characteristic of a pungent and multilayered Sauvignon with amazing mid palate depth and purity of fruit.

This 2008 exhibits a complex gooseberries and tropical fruit medley, even spicy, with excellent purity, bringing along a juicy texture, which is ripe, intense and delicate, the length is further complimented by lots of quartz minerality, which is very rare in the Cape, but seems to be an emerging hallmark of Elgin Valley Sauvignon. Well done. For now until 2013.”

Tasted by Certified Sommelier Miguel Chan 18 November 2008.

“Includes 15% Semillon, fermented and aged for three months in new oak. Some skin contact for certain Sauvignon parcels (5 different clones) that are planted on soils with high quartz content. Very cool ferment (12 oC). Fine fresh citrus. Ripe but quite delicate on the nose. A fuller style than most thanks to the Semillon but still tight and fresh, even a little austere on the palate. Firm and slightly grainy. Food friendly. Good length. TA 6.77 g/ l, pH 3.26, RS 1.5 g/ l, 13% .15 in the UK.”

Jewels from South Africa, 26 May 2009 by Julia Harding MW

“This wine is all you want from a world-class, cool-climate Sauvignon. Concentrated fruit of asparagus and gooseberry with some citrus and capsicum polishing off a Sauvignon which needs to be handled with some respect. The blending in of 15% Semillon adds mouth feel and complexity, which all hints to great ageing potential. A broad mouth feel and enduring length leaves no part of the palate untouched, culminating in a Sauvignon of incredible structure, length and quality. It can be paired with a diverse range of dishes like creamed mussels, salmon and even seared tuna. Bravo! Drink now – 2011.”

“attractive orchard fruits (pear and apple) cut with livelier grapefruit and chiselled with minerals – oak and Semillon lend a bit of oomph to the mid-palate but this is dry, firm and impressive. ”

Sarah Ahmed, The Wine Detective, September 2008

“A Sauvignon Blanc that makes an immediate impact, this wine boasts a powerful bouquet packed with primary fruits, green pepper, nettle and asparagus. The palate is even more impressive, where the 15-percent oak matured Sémillon adds a richness  and full mouthfeel. This riper style of Sauvignon will develop beautifully with ageing and is a great match for sushi, tempura prawns or seared tuna.”
