PINOT NOIR

In our quest to achieve a truly great Elgin Valley Pinot Noir we are not influenced or side tracked by other international Pinot Noir producing areas. It is to be true to our own parcel of land with its ancient soils and cool climate; to be proud to create an Elgin Valley Pinot Noir as we believe that the Elgin Valley and the Palmiet River represents the best growing conditions for Pinot Noir in South Africa.

“Ripe berry/cherry juiciness with grippy smoky oak breadth and spices. Firm, tight texture. Now – 2014.”
Shannon Vineyards Pinot Noir 2008 – 4 stars
Decanter Magazine, July 2009, By John Platter

“When I tasted the Pinot Noir as a barrel sample in September, my comments to James was this is a very promising Pinot, with outstanding complexity, depth and richness, however the oak is overpowering as the toasty and charry character tends to dominate the wines, but I was reassured that once the wine will be blended, it’s going to be another breed, and hey he was right.

Tasted yesterday (18 November 2008), the aromatics of the Pinot have changed beyond recognition, much more contained, oak not as dominant as initially perceived in September, typical Burgundian complexity, with complex notes of ripe maraschino cherries, raspberry, strawberries and hints of truffles and dark mushrooms, impressive, textured, soft and elegant with ripe tannins and just the perfect extraction, the purity and concentration of fruit is mind boggling, and this is another wine from Shannon Vineyards that is just fantastic, WOW. South African Pinot Noir is reaching another era of perfection, this is a wine that was made in the vineyard, as the purity of fruit can attest, enjoy now until 2015.”

“How this Pinot Noir evolves in the glass is quite extraordinary. Considerable emphasis is placed on vineyard site selection and it pays off in this remarkable wine, full of layered fruit and smooth tannins. On the nose you'll find the traditional earthy character of Pinot Noir (mushrooms, forest floor) and on the palate the trademark silky, smooth tannins, you'd come to expect. Easily one of the most impressive Pinot's ever tasted out of South Africa and once again sure to be mistaken for quality Burgundy when tasted blind. Only 9 Barrels made. Drink Now - 2015.”

“The grapes from three vineyards with different soils are vinified and matured separately and, once they have expressed their individuality, are they blended. A judicious ten months of oak maturation in Burgundian oak has added vanilla to the layers of red and black fruit, wild berries and spice. A winner with succulent rare fillet and porcini sauce.”
